Chapter Six

Arthur woke slowly, enjoying the feel of the warm body entwined with his. He lay on his back and listened to Mary’s even breathing. Spending the night beside her meant he hadn’t truly slept as not for a moment had he forgotten to whom that form belonged. The night had been equal parts heaven and hell.

He had been so tempted during that moment in the carriage to kiss her, but he’d told himself doing so would be a mistake. What he longed to do with her now would be an even bigger mistake. Yet how could it be when it felt so right?

His heartbeat thudded alarmingly at the notion and his entire body stirred from head to toe, every fiber of his being aware of the woman along his side.

Based on the hint of daylight coming through the window, dawn was well underway. There was no purpose in rising early as they needed to wait to see what the conditions were like. That made it even more inviting to remain in the warm bed.

Mary shifted and her hand came to rest lightly on his chest, her head on his shoulder. He moved to hold the curve of her waist. Her breath came out in a sigh, and she eased closer. He knew she still slept and had no intention of taking advantage of that fact. However, it didn't mean he wouldn't enjoy this moment. Dare he attempt to convince her they should act on the awareness between them?

But he intended to lead with the feelings coursing through him, not just passion. It seemed no matter how many times he told himself to keep his distance and treat her as a friend and nothing more, he failed. He had always believed they were bound together by a force larger than themselves. That seemed true now more than ever since fate had brought them together once again.

He pressed a kiss to the top of her head and held her closer, his heart overflowing with tenderness. The dip of her waist where his hand rested brought to mind the womanly changes in her body. Her curves were more distinct now, her breasts full, and her hips flaring to round toward her bottom.

Her hand fluttered on his chest then trailed over his ribs. Even that faint touch was enough to send need surging through him. He wanted to wake her so he could look into her eyes and see if she felt any of the same desire he did.

But old doubts resurfaced, and he hesitated, wanting to hold her a little longer. There was always the chance that if she woke, she would move away as quickly as possible.

Somehow this moment seemed pivotal. As if with one wrong move on his part, he would lose her again forever. That couldn't possibly be true as they had the rest of this journey and the return one to get through. Yet he couldn't dismiss his concern. He ran his fingers over her hip and back to her waist, squeezing gently as he kneaded the flesh there.
